"For everyone who has lost in love and longed for an epic do-over, Fool Me Twice is laugh-out-loud, feel-good fun." —Jennifer Echols, author of Forget You and Dirty Little Secret

Last summer, Mackenzie and Landon were the perfect couple. And then he dumped her and broke her heart. Fast forward a year and they’re back at their summer jobs at Serenity Ranch and Spa. And Mack and her best friend Bailey are spending their time fantasizing about making voodoo dolls and playing childish pranks on Landon.

Lucky for Mack, the perfect opportunity presents itself. Landon takes a nasty fall and suddenly he’s stuck in the past—literally. His most recent memory is of last summer, when they were together, so now he’s calling Mack pet names and hanging all over her.

The plan is simple: keep Landon at arm’s length, manipulate him so he’s the one falling in love, and then BAM, dump him in the most epic revenge plot in the history of everdom. There’s only one teensy problem: Mack can’t fall for Landon a second time.

Internship opening

***THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED****

Hi All,

I am currently seeking an intern exclusively to read full manuscripts and provide reader reports.
For the most part, you'll be choosing whichever full manuscripts you want, reading as long as they interest you, and emailing me a short paragraph or two on your thoughts.

Occasionally, I may ask you to read a specific manuscript to give me a second opinion.

I still personally read ALL of manuscripts that I request, however knowing where you stopped and why helps cut down the time I spend reading, particularly when I'm on the fence and just "waiting to see if it goes somewhere."

Additionally, I am hoping for a reader who can notify me immediately when they find a "You should drop everything and read this" manuscript. Sometimes it's not about articulating what's great, it's about making sure I don't miss anything incredible.
I suspect it is about 5-10 hours a week, but that’s flexible.

PLEASE NOTE: I represent only middle grade and young adult fiction, plus romance (new adult, regency, and contemporary). I am looking for someone who loves each of these genres equally!
Some basics:
  • This is a remote position (it can be done anywhere. Literally. You can live in Zimbabwe.)
  • You can work at any time of the day.
  • It’s okay if you are a writer. It’s okay if you are querying and have queried me or plan to. It's okay if you are agented and/or published. You may want to make sure your agent is comfortable with it.
  • It is an unpaid internship, but I am happy to chat with you about publishing and give basic advice.
  • You may choose to call yourself a 'lit agent intern' on twitter and whatnot, but you will not be able to publicly discuss that you are  MY intern, specifically, and you cannot tweet about any of the queries or manuscripts. This is pretty standard, but I wanted to be upfront.
  • If you already intern for another agency, publisher, I am unable to consider you for this position, simply to avoid any conflicts of interest.
  • If you happen to live in the Seattle-Tacoma area (NOT required) and are interested in working together in my home office for a few hours once a month, we may discuss this. You may also be paid in lunch dates. ;-)
Please send an email to: Mandy@d4eo.com

Please put INTERNSHIP inthe subject line! I have a filter set-up to ensure it goes into the correct folder and does not end up in spam.
Include:
-Any publishing background (No experience required, but it’s good to know if you do have some)
-A list of your favorite books (5 to 10 titles. Please stick with the aforementioned genres. DO NOT USE CLASSICS. I'm looking to see if our tastes in the current market align well.)

-Do not attach anything.

-I do not need a full blown resume. Keep it casual and just tell me a bit about yourself and your favorite books. If you WANT to include your resume that is fine, but please paste it below the rest. No need to write a new resume just for me.
And, final tip: I really do prefer you just be yourself and skip the formalness! I'm not an HR director, just an agent looking for someone I click with who would like to see what the slush pile is like.
I will wait until this weekend to screen the applicants, so the position is “open” until Friday, March 7, at midnight. Keep an eye on this space and I'll announce when the intern is selected. Due to the volume of replies I get to intern calls, I don't personally reply to them. (Unless you are selected, of course!)

If you have replied to previous internships and were not selected, feel free to email again.

Writing & Selling the YA Novel Course Giveaway

Hello, folks!

On January 27, I am once again teaching my Writing & Selling the YA novel course via Lit Reactor:

http://litreactor.com/classes/how-to-write-and-sell-the-young-adult-novel-with-mandy-hubbard

This class has sold out all 18 seats the three previous times I've taught it, and this year I elected to go for a smaller class size of 12, which should give us more time to get to know each other and talk about your projects.

The class consists of:
- 7 Lectures
- Three critiques by me (Your query letter, your synopsis-- wherein we'll discuss all the major plot points and character ARCs and how your project fits into the current YA landscape/market---and the first 10 pages of your book, where I'll help you smooth out your opening and pinpoint any voice/writing issues.)
-Peer critiques-- you will be assigned groups so that you can read and critique one another.
- Samples of query letters for clients I've signed, including an analysis of what caught my attention and why I requested the book.
-message boards in which we can chat about anything and everything writing and YA related.
-A final conference call with me and your classmates to talk about all things publishing and anything you didn't get answered during the course.

Enrollment is open now, so feel free to hop on and register. The class is likely to sell out, FYI.

But if you can't swing it financially right now, here's your opportunity to get in for free.

Lauren Barnholdt has generously offered a scholarship for one student. That's right-- she's going to pay the $399 tuition for you!

If you don't know Lauren, you should. Besides the fact that she's clearly an awesome human being, she's also funny and smart and wildly talented. She wrote some pretty awesome books, including this wildly popular one:

So enter below. Winner will be selected on January 22 so you'll have a few days before class to polish up your work.

New Book-- FOOL ME TWICE!

Hi Everyone!

So, I've been keeping a secret. For a really long time.

Last year, I started writing a new project. It was goofy and funny and so enoyable to write, it reminded me of the early years of my writing career.  Yes, I realized--I missed the days of PRADA AND PREJUDICE and YOU WISH and writing romance and jokes and letting the characters act stupid and fall in love.

As soon as I sat down and started this project, it just kind of wrote itself. And man, it was fun to write.

I sent it out into the world, and it sold.

Right before Thanksgiving.

OF 2012!!

Yes, I've been sitting on this news for a full year now, but today the following deal was submitted to Publisher's Marketplace:

PRADA AND PREJUDICE author and literary agent Mandy Hubbard’s FOOL ME TWICE, pitched as THE VOW meets OVERBOARD, in which a girl’s ex-boyfriend loses a year of memory, so she pretends they’re still together as she plots ways to avenge her broken heart, to Caroline Abbey at Bloomsbury, for publication May 2014, by Bob Diforio at D4EO Literary Agency.

AND GUESS WHAT?

It has a blurb from my author idol, Jennifer-freaking-Echols:
"For everyone who has lost in love and longed for an epic do-over, Fool Me Twice is laugh-out-loud, feel-good fun." —Jennifer Echols, author of Forget You and Dirty Little Secret

But wait... THERE'S MORE!

It has a cover.

A cover I love:

SO... GO add it to your goodreads. And keep an eye out for it--Coming May 6, 2014!

Call for Submissions...

I am seeking writer(s) of new adult or young adult fiction, for a couple of upcoming projects under development at D4EO. The selected writer will be offered representation by me/D4EO Literary Agency. The writer will then work directly with me on the development of an upcoming YA or NA project (The audience/genre will be tailored to the writer’s voice and interests) from the ground up.

(PLEASE NOTE- when I say “NA” I mean a contemporary fiction project with characters in their twenties. Think Cora Carmack, Jay Crownover, Jamie Maguire, not literary fiction with young-ish characters or adult sci-fi/western/fantasy with a 20-something characters).

To be considered:

Send an email to: d4eosubmissions@gmail.com

Include a simple introduction with any relevant writing/publishing background (None required, but if you have any credits, let us know).

Include in this email what genres/styles you are most drawn to writing (fantasy? contemporary? YA? NA?)

Paste in a 5 to 10 page writing sample from a new adult (contemporary only per above) or young adult (any subgenre) project. Choose your BEST work here! Your book DOES NOT have to be completed. If 5 pages is all you have written, that’s 100% okay. You DO NOT need to include any kind of pitch. I’m looking for the right voice here, not the right storyline/plot/hook.

That’s it. I’ll be combing through the pages, looking for the right voice for the project(s) I have in mind. The top couple of choices will be asked to write a few pages based on a specific idea, and I will select the right writer for my project at that time.

FAQ:

Q: What do you mean by projects “in development?”

A: Anyone who follows me on twitter knows I’m constantly saying, “I want a book about X. Someone has to be writing this. Send it to me.” Well, after years of doing this without finding the projects I’m hungry for, I’ve decided to simply find the right writer and work directly with them on developing the book I’m looking for.

Q: So… is this like a book developer/packager?

A: While we are developing this project “in house” and matching it with the right writer, I’m not launching a full-blown packager. I’m simply looking to work one on one with a talented writer who can pull of writing the kind of book I’m looking for.

Q: How will the compensation work?

A: The compensation structure will be similar to how it works when an agent signs a writer for their original fiction. Meaning, the agency and the writer get paid when the book sells. The agency will deduct the agency commission and the balance is paid to the writer.

At many packagers, the vast majority—between 70 and 90 percent—of an advance paid by a publisher goes to the packager, not the author, and these authors often receive little or no share of subrights sales. That will not be the set up in this case.

Q: What’s in it for the author?

A: You work with me every step of the way, from brainstorming to line editing and everything in between. You can choose your pseudonym (or use your real name), for this project and any thereafter, so if our joint project sells well, you keep building upon that. (Whereas at packagers, they often “own” the pen-name). Think of it like writer’s bootcamp, working one on one with an agent. In addition, I hope it’s just the beginning of a long and fruitful career, and we’re able to work on future projects of your own choosing, in a more traditional author/agent capacity.

Q: What’s in it for D4EO?

A: I get fantastic projects to shop. I get to discover new voices. And I get to do my favorite part of the job—helping authors break into the industry.

So that’s it. I’ll be screening the submissions, initially, after November 4, but likely won't be selecting someone until late November. So take your time, polish 5 to 10 pages, and send it in.

I look forward to reading your work.

*** PLEASE NOTE THIS INTERNSHIP HAS BEEN FILLED. Keep on my website for opportunities in the future****

Hi All!

Recently, we've had some fun/exciting developments at D4EO, with the promotion of one of my interns to a foreign rights assistant. That said, she's still reading/screening queries for me! My second intern, however, has elected to take a break, and so I am in need of a new amazeballs individual to maintain the query pile, and read some full manuscripts of your choosing. It means managing an email account by screening the queries into folders for my review, and sending the requests/rejections once I’ve reviewed them. It would also entail writing up reader reports on full manuscripts. You will not be required to read the entire manuscript of a book that does not resonate with you-- you would simply tell me where you stopped reading and why.

I still personally read ALL of manuscripts that I request, however knowing where you stopped and why helps cut down the time I spend reading, particularly when I'm on the fence and just "waiting to see if it goes somewhere."
I suspect it is about 5-10 hours a week (just a few hours with queries, and the full reading beyond that is at your discretion), but that’s flexible.

How to Write and Sell the Young Adult Novel with Mandy Hubbard

It's that time again! My course on Writing and Selling the YA Novel begins on February 11!

Enrollment just started today, so there's plenty of room (18 seats) if you simply want to skip this giveaway and register for the class!

During the course, you'll get plenty of lectures on the genre, craft, and industry tips. Beyond that, I'll be reading and critiquing your first 20 pages, plus your query letter!
